Shirley and Billy Giles Obituary

Shirley Jewell Moore Giles, 87, passed away Friday, June 14, 2019, and Billy Tate Giles, 90, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019, in Shreveport, LA.  They were married 68 years before their passing.

Billy was born October 23, 1929, in Trion, GA.  He attended Trion High School, the University of Georgia, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA.  He enlisted in the United States Air Force before working at Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation in the Measurement and Gas Accounting Department.

Shirley was born January 3, 1932, in Chickamauga, GA.  She attended Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Centenary.  She also received a Master’s Degree and a Master’s Plus 30 at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA.  She was employed at Erlanger hospital, Oliver H. Vanhorn, and M.L. Bath before becoming a teacher.  She retired from the Caddo Parish School System after having taught at Mooretown Elementary School and Walnut Hill Elementary School.

Billy and Shirley were both long time members of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport and members of the Co-Wed Sunday School Class.  Billy will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.  He was known for his love of a good joke and his sense of humor.  Shirley will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.  She was known for her hugs and she gave the world a smile each and every day.  She was always helping others along the way.  They will be missed greatly by those whom they loved and those who loved them.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Ernest Giles and Mary Bernice Tate Giles; siblings, Harlan Raymond Giles, Willie Ray Giles, and Laura Tabitha Giles.  Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, James Phillip Moore and Dora Bell Snow Moore; siblings, Doris Moore McGuffey, and James Nealy Moore.

They are survived by their children, William Dennis Giles, Linh Giles, Debra Anne Giles Lefelar, Gary Lefelar; grandchildren, George William Lefelar, Connie Chai Lefelar, Timothy Edward Lefelar, Amber Lake Lefelar; great-granddaughter, Kimberly Nicole Lefelar (their “Lil Bit”); honorary son, Santo Ferrara; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as their Co-Wed Sunday School Family.

A memorial graveside service will be held to honor Billy and Shirley Giles on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. at West Hill Cemetery in Trion, GA.
