Dr. Charles David Cook, age 88, of Rome, GA, passed away peacefully at his home, known as "The Farm" where he resided with his old dog, Rocky.

Dr. Cook was born April 27, 1934 in Chattoogaville, GA, son of the late Joseph and Odessa VanPelt Cook.  He studied Biology at Jacksonville State University in Alabama, before serving in the U.S. Army where he worked in military intelligence as a Russian and German language interpreter.

Following his military service, he continued his education at the University of Georgia where he received his PhD in Biological Sciences.  He then held a prestigious position at the Smithsonian National Museum in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Cook had a fulfilling career as a rigorous biology professor at Floyd College where he served as the chair of the Mathematical and Natural Sciences Department, retiring in 1996.  During his career, he received many accolades and had tremendous impact on his students and colleagues who became life-long friends.

He may best be remembered for his love of opera, his appreciation for a great meal, and his lifelong pursuit of knowledge.  Undoubtedly, the world lost a true scholar with his passing.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, family from Rome, GA that includes his great-nephew, Joe Cook; Joe's children, Zaden and Amira whom he loved dearly; and his loving caretaker and niece, Lisa Cook.  He also leaves behind family from Lyerly, GA, that includes his younger brother, Daniel Cook; nephews, Johnny Cook, Gordon "Chip" Cook, and Eddie Cook; great-nephews, Daniel Cook, Dewayne Cook, Seth Edwards, and Lauren Edwards.  The world is not whole without him in it.

In accordance with Dr. Cook's wishes, no formal services are planned.
