Mr. Roy J. Starkey, age 81, of Trion, GA, died Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Starkey was born June 13, 1936, in Trion, GA, son of the late Tom and Lula Potts Starkey.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a police officer with the Milledgeville State Hospital and had also served 17 years with the Summerville Police Department, having been the Summerville Police Chief for 8 years. 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Starkey was preceded in death by sons, Roy Lee Starkey and Tony Starkey; brothers, Clarence Starkey, Doyle Starkey, and Steve Starkey; sisters, Louise DeBerry, Ailean Hill, and Lucille Everett; grandchildren, Dartey Ford and Tonya Starkey.

Mr. Starkey is survived by his wife, Sylvia Jean Farmer Starkey; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Starkey; daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Weaver, Tambra and Butch Cordle, and Beverly Ford; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and special friends, Wayne Lunsford, J. C. Boyle, and Roy Berry.

Funeral services for Mr. Starkey will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 19, 2017, from the Welcome Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Shores officiating.  Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be grandsons.  Honorary pallbearers will be all active and retired law enforcement officers.

Mr. Starkey will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Saturday, November 18, 2017.  He will also be in state at the Welcome Hill Baptist Church from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Sunday.
