Capt. Jackie Terry Barksdale (Ret.), age 71, of Trion, GA, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Capt. Barksdale was born July 5, 1946, in Trion, GA, son of the late Doke and Francis Brumbelow Barksdale. He was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church and was employed with the Walker County Sheriff’s Department. Capt. Barksdale retired from full-time service in January 2011, however he returned to his post in the courthouse as a Deputy Sheriff, a post he served last on December 27, 2017.
From 1975 until 2011, Capt. Barksdale held positions in the Jail Division, Patrol Division, and the Court Services Division. During those years, he held the rank of Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. He was named the Rossville Exchange Club’s Officer of the Year in February of 1997. Capt. Barksdale was considered the authority on civil process and warrant service. Prior to his service with the Walker County Sheriff’s Department, he had been employed with Harriet and Henderson and the Trion Police Department.
Capt. Barksdale is survived by his sons, Terry Barksdale and Tracy (Teresa) Barksdale; grandchildren, Josh Barksdale, Skylar Barksdale, and Leesa Marie Barksdale; great-grandchildren, Rylie Barksdale, Landon and Ansley Rich; siblings, Sandra (Junior) Ivy, Billie Milam, Joyce Haygood, Juanita Farmer, Charles Barksdale, and Lamar Barksdale; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his beloved companion "Bel-Bel".
Funeral services for Capt. Barksdale will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, January 20, 2018, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin J. Norton and Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery. The Walker County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Matthews, Gene “Goose” Milam, and the Staff of Walker County Sheriff’s Department.
Capt. Barksdale will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday, January 19, 2018.
